My LFS tries to sell crap LEDs like marineland and doesnt know what ATI is, another won't even tell you what kind of halides your going to get for your money if you buy from them. LFS is the worst place to get info from.
I'm a halide & T5 guy, but there are good reasons to go LEDs. You need to figure out how your going to mount your lights, if yearly bulb changes are going to be acceptable. 4 T5 bulbs is $80 a year...LEDs don't sound too bad now, do they?
I bought a 150w phoenix 14k halide bulb (normally $40) a reef optix pendant ($100) and bluewave m-81 ballast ($100) for $50 used. Now a $40 bulb change every 12-18 months.
I bought a new 4x24 ATI Sunpower and bulbs for $500 , every year its $80 or new bulbs.
A decent led could be $200-300, but it should save you money in the long run.
Buy used halides or a good T5 like ATI or TEK. Aquaticlife, Catalina, current are okay also but honestly you can do better (see beginning of list) or try LEDs, they are getting much better, I want to try them on a small tank like yours.
T5 bulbs aren't supposed to get hot, metal halides are. Every different kind of lighting takes electricity and makes heat and light energy. Halides are the least efficient at turning electricity into light because they make a lot of heat, t5 is the middle ground and LEDs turn energy into light better without creating wasted heat energy.
