Welcome to RS Greg. You will find so much info here you'll be bursting. Good to see someone a bit closer to Oz. Looking forward to pics.

Re: Hi from New Zealand

Thanks everyone,
Didn't have the luxury of live rock to start so used dead coral rock from a fellow reefer who broke his tank down.
After a month or more water regularly tested 0 for everything apart from pH that's between 8.6 - 8.8
Running the fans 24/7 as temp keeps going up to 30C without, dont run the heater at thje moment.
Have added some sps frags and a yellow tail damsel and a pair of common clowns.
Got about 40kgs of coral rock in the tank so might have to take some out?
Hair algae is doing my head in though so looking forward to adding something to take care of that in about 3 weeks - perhaps a tang?

Not sure if the hair algae is due to the lights - I'm running them about 12 hours/day.

Did you all have the green algae stage and how long before it went?
Will post pics very soon.

Re: Hi from New Zealand

You should back your lights off some, 12 hours a day is quite a bit. That will help slow the algae growth.

+1 12 hours a day is quite a bit

might also add a couple of Emerald crabs - Hair Algae eating machines...

Re: Hi from New Zealand

+2. I only run my lights for 10 hours so it may help if you reduce it. I had lots of algae at the start but my Foxface took care of most of it.

As Glenn said a couple of emeralds would be good. I had bad hair algae and got a sea hare and he literally wiped it out in a couple of days. Be careful though as they can ink!

Re: Hi from New Zealand

Thanks,
Was worried. Not sure if we have emerald crabs over here.
Do you turn the moonlights off at night then? Should they turn off after a while?
Just spent 4 hours rearranging the rockwork and got a fellow reefer who's going to give me some sps frags this weekend so will post pics then.

I don't...

I would suggest 8, 9 or 10 I run mine 9

There was a thread on this... see if I can find it & give it a bump :)

I don't turn my moonlights off either. I run my lights for 8 hours a day.
