I don't think there is a lack of fine dining and things to do in South Beach.
Emeril Lagasse has one of his restaurants there. Lots of shopping, museums, beaches. If you run into Lebron tell him I said to go to #&# LOL

Emeril is the tv chef there yeah? I know thomas Keller (French laundry I will eat at one day) I have eaten at el bulli and the fat duck (fat duck wins for me, incredible)..... I guess I need to get making reservations!

Sound great! I must charter a decent boat for diving (with all camera kit is easier- do you reccomend anyone?)
To be honest this was just using airmiles/ Hilton points for a free holiday (I have a LOT), and I always love the states for customer service...
Miami is an easy direct flight from home airport.

lots 6-pack boats you can charter for the day - google "Florida Keys Dive Charters” and you’ll find plenty of info.

Not a diver, but I agree with Glenn on the Florida Keys being a better place to dive than near the heavily populated tourist areas.

Do not Dive off Miami, there won't be much to see. Drive south about an hour to the Keys, lots of great reefs and wrecks. For shallow water stuff your best bet would be John Penny Camp in Key Largo and if you want to go deeper I would reccomend doing one of the many wrecks. Key dive charters is a great option. I appreciate the advice on the eheim pumps so feel free to send me a pm if you have any questions for want some contacts perhaps. I grew up in south Fla and have been fishing and diving my whole life. My family also ownes a vacation home in the middle keys that actually gets rented to a guy from the UK a few months out of the year. Good luck!

what g8r said, water clarity is horrid in miami. I would call down to the keys before taking the trip though. The keys is worth the drive no matter what but this time of year we get lots of wind making fishing and diving close to impossible on the reef(atlantic side).
Fort Lauderdale in my opinion is far nicer the miami, but the cities have basically merged with no real defining line (miami, hollywood and lauderdale).
If you could tell me what you like to do, I could help you out with planning fun things to do. There are lots of options like seeing a miami dolphins game for example, IGFA fishing museum, visiting the keys, south beach and the new amazing hard rock casino in hollywood(tons of nightclubs).

Thanks for the input guys! I would love my wife to see an American sports game- the atmosphere at the last one I saw was amazing (mavs vs suns basketball)- to be honest we just don't compare in the UK (there is a more aggressive undercurrent at the football, the rugby doesn't get the crowds, and the cricket ain't exactly electric, though watching the ashes from a private pool in st lucia last year wasn't so bad!).
The casino sounds a good plan- usually we would get a few days in Vegas, but missed it this year, so that may be a good way to just throw some money away.
Shopping is a big thing for her (especially in the US where the shop assistants actually help you)- I'm guessing we won't be struggling there?
I'd say restaurants more than clubs is our thing- I'm getting old and creaky after all....

Seems some really good ideas. Here are a few others.

Near South Beach,

RJ dive adventures and if into fishing Bouncer Smith.

Food, You may want to try Pizza Rustica on south beach.

A little north.

IANTD HQ is in North Miami Beach. You should touch base with them about trimix and rebreather events. Also H20 Dive center in North Miami was really heavy into spear fishing and tech diving. Don't know if they stiill are.

Most stuff off miami would be wreck diving. For reef stuff as others have suggested John pennekamp in Key largo would be a great option.

If you drive to Sawgrass from South Beach. Avoid 7 - 9:30am and 3:30 - 6:30pm. :D

Have fun.

GREAT- thanks John and all, my credit card is already whimpering at the malls.....
Will see if I can get a tech diving pass from missus or whether we just go together and drop in (advantage of that is I can drink the day before and after I guess!).
Thx again...
