NEW RSM250......and it begins!

Another update!

I picked up another dosing unit so I'm now dosing calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, potassium automatically and iodine, strontium manually. All parameters are in check and have remained steady since the beginning. I noticed drop offs in the above listed parameters upon introducing the soft and Lps corals. I suspect I will see substantial drops and need to increase dosing after another week of monitoring due to some new additions......

Well........I went to the LFS and things got a little crazy.......the pics below are during a quick lights on to see how the new ATI bulbs look as well as the new inhabitants after adding them around 7pm (the reefs' bed time). I also added two unique pieces of rock to the top left side which have opened up some additional spots for future additions. I've got some pretty good ideas for future Lps additions in the lower areas and have two more sps pieces in mind for the near future. Going to let these guys all settle in first.

The final large addition of sps onto the reef!

Aside from some nice zoa additions over the next couple weeks this about does it for a while!

The birds nest and acros all have their own cool little security crabs.

I'll be monitoring all of my levels aggressively for the next two weeks to ensure everything is getting fed.

I'm going to try and get my hands on a decent camera rather than my iPhone so hopefully I can get some better pic up!

When trying to raise your calcium levels to feed a fully stocked sps/Lps tank, ensure the hose from your dosing container is attached...........when levels continue to drop to 350, check those attachments.

Thankfully my water change regime assisted in keeping levels high enough to not suffer any losses. I'm getting great polyp extension from everything and the tank is nearly algaeless, don't ask how.

Happy Reefing!

Took some more pics while the office was a bit darker. My professional iPhone photography shows the colours much more accurately.

These two are best buds. Hopefully the Galaxy blenny can get some meat on his friends bones and teach em to eat!

Just a quick update!

Today I added 4 sand sifting snails and 1 royal gamma basset.

The snails are amazing! In all my years of owning tanks I've never had them. The minute they hit the sand they disappeared, it was very cool to watch.

The royal gamma has been tearing around exploring his new home. He's found a cave and it looks like that's where he'll be headed if he's having some down time.

Ive been having a hard time spotting any of the 3 peppermint shrimp and was growing concerned they may have bit the bullet. I couldn't find them anywhere on Saturday but I did notice there was still a ton of tiny aptasia on 2 specific rocks. This morning I came in and they are all completely wiped out. I'm assuming the shrimp are hold up inside one of three caves that I'm unable to see into.

All other inhabitants 11 hermit crabs, 5 snails are still accounted for and seem to be quite happy.

Couple quick pictures (I need to buy a magnet glass cleaner!)

Be careful with the magnet glass cleaner. I got the same sand as you do and I read that there can be metal in the sand. I ended up scratching the glass on my Reefer 450 when cleaning.

Ya I almost learned that the hard way when my brand new vortech pump let go on the wet side. The magnet picked up a ton of the substrate and jammed the propeller bad.

Well I need a little assistance/advice.

All things are looking great BUT I'm having a real hard time getting my calcium/alkalinity/magnesium in check.

I've been trying to raise my calcium from 350 to 370-400 and my magnesium from 1200 to 1300. My DHK was sitting at 10-11 two days ago when I began increasing my calcium dose and mag dose. Given how high my DHK was I had some pretty good space to get my Calcium up while dropping my Alk at the same time to 7-8.

I just tested my parameters after dosing 50ml Calcium, 36ml Magnesium (per day) for the last 2 days. My calcium snow sitting at about 370 and magnesium is a soft 1220........my confusion is in regards to how steeply my dhk dropped off in just two days. It is now at 7......... That's a drop of 3dhk in two days :s. All sps and lps are fully extended and seem to be, "living the dream" as they say lol.

After speaking to a well informed gentleman I was informed that leaving my calc and mag where they are now would be just fine for my sps and lps. What I am unsure off is how do I now maintain my current calc/mag AND dhk where they are at now?

Should I reduce my calcium dose now and dose equal quantities of calc/alk? Should I increase my mag dose to help stabilize the other two? Mag seems to take it's time to raise.

I haven't been dosing all at all so my main concern is maintaining where I'm at right now and then making slight minor adjustments. Any suggestions or insight would be great!

Ps.I have read the extensive amount of info on reefkeeping.com. I'd just like to hear it from a person I can dialogue with and ask questions back and forth.

Thanks everyone :)
