....Anyway, I was wondering if I wanted to use the old PCs over a frag tank how shallow should I go to have success with things (i.e. get them started growing before moving them under the t5s)??? Thanks.

I can only give advice into what I have done... I'm running 130W pc's over my frag tank with pretty good success.... but it's only 10" deep! Yeah you read that right.... 10" deep.... it's a 10g frag tank....
