Karin's Reef Chronicle

I guess I'll post an update, if you all don't mind.
My calcium and kh levels have come down just a tad. My other parameters remain the same as before.
I will be doing a 15% WC tomorrow.
My astrea snails are still doing a phenomenal job. The turbo snails I bought are bugging me. They tend to flip onto their backs and can't get up so I have to rescue them constantly.
I haven't seen Kermit, the crab since last night :( I hope he didn't die. I'm always worried about that. I wonder what's up. He's always been out and eating my plentiful (sigh) diatoms.
On Sunday I will take a water sample to my LFS and have them test it as well. Before I subject clownfish to my water conditions I want to make sure they'll be all right.
That's all I can t think of for now.
I'm definitely in the ' hurry up and wait' phase at the moment.

Updates are AWESOME & it sounds like everything is in normal progression.
I sent you a PM about re-naming this thread as your reef chronicle. :)

Before I bring out the popcorn, I shall post some humble pictures. Taken with my iPhone, plus glare from the windows. But that's all I've got right now.

And there it is. I bought only frags because I like to watch things grow and get happy and, should something die, I won't kick myself (too much).
So far so good. Even shrimpie decided to make an appearance.
The leather, Duncan and the bird's nest frag are my newest additions. Now, I think, I'm going to wait a while and see how they do. :shell::starfish:

I'm very proud of my sweetie. He made a contraption for my half-moon tank so I could suspend the light above the tank and he also covered the tank with a custom egg crate lid. Nobody can escape anymore!
I think it looks great and I couldn't be happier. Here is a picture...Hanging Light.jpg

Yes, the quilt belongs to my partner. His mother, who died several years ago, made it and it had some worn triangles and seams were coming apart. So I fixed it and, since it's too fragile for daily use, we decided to hang it up and not hide in a closet somewhere. I love it!

So I bought this tiny little golden maxima clam today. Impulse buy, as you do, sigh...
How do I properly take care of it?
I bought a bottle of phytoplankton and cut a water bottle to place over top of it for feeding purposes. I was told to feed it that way 3x a week. I placed the clam on the sand bed. Will it get enough light there?
I have the "Current USA Orbit marine LED light".
Thanks for any suggestions.

I was going to quote that same article Glenn did.

Just FYI clams can be tricky. I'm a huge clam fan, but I just lost one *i think* because I damaged its foot on accident. They can also run into trouble after showing no sign of it at all and lots of forum posts that amount to "my clam died and I don't know why."

So, I love claims and i don't think there is anything special for you to do at the moment, but I wanted you to know they can be fickle...especially in new tanks.

The one thing I'm mostly concerned with at the moment, is the light it gets where it sits. I'm afraid to move it up higher because wherever I'd place it, it could easily fall off. I can't glue it down like I do a coral frag, can I? The do have a foot... and I worry I would damage something.

I'm going to let someone that knows more about clams respond as I'm definitely still learning, but no you can't glue them down. In fact, they may move around on you to a location they like better! I have one (a deresa) on the sand bed on the back of my tank, which is NOT where I put it. Now, I dont think they generally will move, but they can. I suspect mine wanted different flow than where I had it? I dunno.

I can't speak to the pros and cons of different clam acclimation techniques well, but for the maxima my understanding is they will generally want to be on rock and will bore into the rock and attach with their foot (well byssal filaments). So, that's how they stabilize.

Id read this article on placement, but you will want to put it over some rock whether you put a little rock on your sanded or live rock. It says bottom to middle placement. I'm current very gunshy about moving them around too much because I think I damaged one doing that.

In that regard, I think I'd consider wherever you put it to be where you want it long term. Although, I've read about putting them over a rock in your sandbed to acclimate and then up a bit on your live rock, but I'm far from an experit on this.

Well, from everything I've read so far then, I should move it higher. I'm thinking of a couple of places I could put it that are mid-way up and, hopefully, fall-safe. I'll tell it to "stay", maybe that'll help...
