Thought i would give a quick update on the tank. It's been very interesting watching the tank go through some stages over the last few weeks. Brown algae showed up and is now almost all gone thanks to the CUC. Some green algae is starting to show up in the rocks and sand bed. It looks similar to a fern leaf, whats the best way to remove this stuff. Our clowns are doing great very active and pigs when it comes to meal time. They are still juvenile and i have been reading mixed ideas on how much to feed. I was told at my lfs twice a day, is that correct? They really dont seem to like frozen foods that much. What are others feeding their clowns? We also have a cleaner shrimp that has molted once already he is also a pig when it comes to meal time. He is a great source of entertainment. He has his cave and rocky out crop that he hangs out in. My wife caught me one night just watching him and the snails for 45 mins lol. We are very very happy with how the tank is progressing. I am curious though about a few things. The first one being for everyone that is running the filter floss. What color does your turn in say a 24 hour period. Mine is turning brown and is very very dirty. Second what is the best way to clean up the sand bed a little bit. There are a few low flow areas that have collected some small rubble ect. Third what RO/DI units is everyone using.
Thanks
Great your tank is doing well. BTW, the green "fern-like" stuff is Hair Algae. You can add emerald crabs (some people hate emerald crabs) or Hermit crabs to your CUC to get rid of it. If you can, pull it out ASAP. Just try not to let any go floating in the tank, it will reattach to anything.
The filter floss dirt (detritus) is many times related to how much you feed your tank. Its basically fish poop and food, dying stuff from rock and coral, and a little algae etc. it takes mine 2-3 days and it's done for. I tend to over feed.
I use 1/2 tubing to suck up the nasties. It has a much slower flow than the larger stuff. Just be careful not to get sand in it, stay slightly above the sand and wave the tubing around to stir it up as you go. You can also move the sand around with something. Sometimes I use my long handled scraper. Just be careful to only mix the top of the sand. Don't go over 1/4 " into the sanded though.
I use a BulkReefSupply RO/DI unit. It was the least expensive at the time I got mine. I got a 4 stage 75 gpd for $130. We have group buys that automatically make you a preferred customer and will give you a price of $117.00!
Just a side note: I later added the upgrade to 150 gpd, I couldn't stand how slow it was, lol! Some companies don't offer this, make sure you buy from one that does. You can add it anytime later if you din't get it right away.
Hope this helps!
