A few questions on Calc. Alk. Mag and RS test kits

Good morning all,

Battling an issue with 7 dkH and trying to raise it to at least 9. So, I know all about the mag. level and how it allows the Calc. and Alk. to remain constant. Here is the dilemna:

Using my API test kits:
Ph: 7.8 RS
......8.2 API
......8.2 Electronic monitor (calibrated, so i can safely agree with API test)
Calc. 440 API
........520 RS

Alk. 2.0 meq RS
Mag. 1400 RS

dkH 7 API
did not test with RS

onto the questions:

1. How many put faith in the RS kits?

2. What would you suggest since my magnesium "might" be ok, should I just use buffer to get the dkH up higher??

3. What, in your experience seems to be the best test kit for magnesium?

thanks for stopping by and helping me!!

Shame on you BigAl - That must be why I lost a long reply LOL!

Anyway - I lost faith in the RS test kits very early, due to misleading and innacurate results. I now use Salifert for Ca, Alk, Nitrates, Mg, and SeaChem & API for some of the other tests

Here's a nice recent review of some of the test kits:

Test Kit Review

And a nice calculator for many of the buffers, Ca additives, etc.:

Reef Chemistry Calculator

Hopefully those will be of some help. :)
