Just about anything can leach all sorts of nasties into the water upon "expiring". But in this case I wouldn't think the Xenia is literally leaching NO3 but the newly expired organics are being consumed by the bacteria in your tank (as it should be) and the end result is elevated NO3 levels. Water changes my friend....

I have a batch of UMI blue xenia near some red sea both are healthy but I lost a good 3"x3" area and noticed a N spike :(
I do have a cleaner shrimp that will pick at the matting of the xenia but not sure what the cause is.
