Thoughts about this substrate?

That is usually considered a good aragonite sand. It should work out well for you. I can't be 100% sure here, but I don't think you'll have a problem with the sand and you puffer. Aragonite sand is comparatively soft compared to many other sands used in aquariums, so the grains don't tend to be too sharp.

Thanks for the input. I actually saw it in person today at the local petco store, but wanted to get some opinions on it.

If it's the same as this... I run it in all my tanks, as do many RS members

a good read here & lots of review

Here the companies website & you can checkout the different grain sizes... I like the size of the special reef grade sand, not to small, so as to suspend

great sand & company, but from your petco link, I could not figure out exactly which sand I was looking at... hope this helps

With puffers (in my experience) the more coarse the sand the better. They're such sloppy eaters and fine sand will trap so much waste and isn't easy to vacuum that you will always be fighting very high nitrates. Large sand fragments won't get sucked up as easy as fine sand when you vacuum, which you will need to do fairly regularly with a puffer if you don't want to be doing bi-weekly water changes. They're great fish but a lot of work in small tanks.
