If you are not installing in pressure type of tank then you should not need to kill them when tighten them foot of water in any size container only has less than .5 psi. I install mine dry but you could wet with water an probly do every you want to do IMO

10 feet of head has 5 psi.

I heard that the gasket could deteriorate over time either due to drying and cracking or breaking down from the saltwater. They said to put silicone grease on it to prevent that. Anyone else ever have that problem? Do most of you just install it dry?

There is a plumbers grease I use my freshwater filters o rings. You can pick it up at lowe's, home depot or any plumbing supply. It's used on alot of plumbing and I've never had any bad affects in my tanks. I'm just running freshwater tanks right now. But I'm pretty sure I saw it used on glassholes.com for their bulkheads also.

+1. I got mine at Lowe's but is what you have a link to. I use it on my skimmer, pump seals & plastic parts that squeak. Have fun!

I could be wrong an don't want to step on anybody's toes by any means but as for cracking due to being dry they are under water also I believe that the cracking is normly caused by UV rays from sun

an please as I said not trying step on toes so if I'm wrong tell me

Ive been using Aladdin "Magic Lube" for the past couple years with no noticable side effects, it is Teflon Based I cant remember if i got from LFS or Pool supply store, it came recommended by a trusted reefer.
I apply to my canister seal every 60 days when i clean it, after i had 1 dryrot and drain 20g into my Living Room.
btw. I never had a problem with bulkhead seals always installed dry, but next disassembly i will prob lube anyway.

There is such a thing as "food grade silicone" that I would think would be reef safe. It's a lubricant not a grease, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
