Refugium sand

Do I ever need to clean or sift my fuge sand? I have about 4 inches in it. Any other maintenance things I should do besides cleaning out my pump? Thanks.

I have never had to stir mine... Sometimes because there is such low flow I have the start of slime algae that is easily scooped out with a net and also the trimming of the macro algae... I dont have much maintenance on the fuge.

I pretty much never do anything in my fuge except turn the Chaeto over every Sunday night. I do have a minimal clean up crew in there (some intentional and some just "Appear"). I have several cerith snails, some Nassarius Snails (good sand stirrers) and of course bristle worms.

For the most part the less you mess with your refugium the better off it is. It does need some occasional attention but for the most part just observe and enjoy
