My 60... Love my arch!

Here's my 60. It's been up for some time, but I haven't been able to finish the rockscaping until just the other day.

When I started my tank back in May, I was able to get a gorgeous arch of Pukani LR the LFS was selling right out of their tank, and I snatched it up to the tune of 7 bucks a pound! But it was well worth it and so beautiful- it's almost two feet high if stood on end- definitely my "show piece"!

Here it is when it was all alone in my tank:

Because the LFS could only get Pukani in 1500lb pallets, they only buy it once or twice a year, so I had to hold out for several months before I could finish my rockscaping, but last week, they got some dry dry Pukani in and I jumped on it!

I bought two pieces to use as pillars underneath the arch, and, well, tell me what you think...

In this pic, you see one other piece of Fijian base rock on the left. It weights 20 lbs. The Pukani that makes up the arch and pillars is so porous, all three pieces weigh only another 40 pounds, so all this rock is only 60lbs!

Here's the left pillar. You can see a nice cave underneath it into the sand...

Here's the right pillar. All of those big holes go all the way through the rock and create some awesome caves and tunnels, and then there's the overhang on the right side. This piece is 8" high and 16" from side to side and 6" deep and only weighs 13 pounds.

A frontal of the right pillar with a better shot of the caves and tunnels that go all the way through. You can see how far the overhang stretches out on the right.

A shot of the tank from the left. The overhang of the main arch doesn't touch the glass, but I still have some adjusting to do and will be able to set it so I can get the manga-float in between it and the glass.

Anyway, the rock is just locked together quite tightly naturally- no dowels or putty, and it's really solid- I almost can't get it to move without using a lot of force, so I think I'm going to be OK as far as rock-quakes.

What do you guys think?

looks very nice...some fine LR there. What sort of filtration are you running? Also what sort of fish do you plan on adding in the future, a word of warning damsels are some of the most aggressive fish and harass almost every fish added to a tank....Although they are beautiful fish than WILL cause alot of problems and catching them later on will prove extremely hard.

No filtration right now, just 40x turnover for flow. Getting ready to add a Remora Pro HOB next month and after that gets broken in, I'll start deciding what to put in. I just have the YTDs in there for something to look at for the time being and for the bio load and when I decide what I want to really stock my tank with, I'll trade 'em in for a couple of bucks at the LFS.

Looks GREAT! I'm a BIG fan of arches and columns!

Be warned... you'll have one HECK of a time catching those lil devils! I had to DRAIN my 10g tank to the point of there was only a couple of inches of water to catch 2 of them. They are called DAMsels for a reason :)

Any other comments? Should I try to raise the arch any higher? Should I expand upon the shelf that extends out to the right? Should I start over from scratch? What would any of you people look to add at this point, as far as rockscaping?

You should get some more rock. You have some decent rock, but it's not a whole lot.

Agreed

Its a great start and I really like the ledge on the right, but you should def get some more rock.

If i was you, I would move the whole arch setup to the left side of the tank so that little ledge is near the middle. Then, put that large rock, that you currently have on the left, on the right side and build a large pillar with it to the height of the arch with a little space in the middle for fish and inverts to hang out in.

Just my opinion, and if you look at my current rock work, I pretty much described what I currently have going on...lol

Ya, now that I'm used to how it looks, even though its 60 lbs in a 60 gal, it now looks a little skimpy...

Jason- where are the pics of what you're talking about? I looked at your 37 gal link in your sig and didn't see what you're talking about. Maybe I missed it? I'd like to see what you're talking about.

Either I'm going to do what Jason said, or move that single rock to the right and build another arch going from the ledge on the right to that single rock.

More rock yes but I wouldn't raise the arch any higher. Think about your rock in terms of what you want your coral to look like and how/where it will grow. Great start!

I think it looks great. Personally, I have taken a lot of my LR out of my display and put it in my fuge to have a more open look.
I love the rock and all of the caves etc, but don't forget that each of those is going to be a detrius trap and therefore a place for alge to flourish. Be sure to take a turkey baster and blow out the detrius now and then or use the siphon when you do water changes.

Hey Lynn,

Ya, as much as I love this type of rock, it does get a lot of funk inside it rather quickly. About every other week I get in there with a small Penguin powerhead and blow things out a bit and when it all settles to the sand, my Spider Conch cleans it up really fast.
