Mischko's 130D Reef Tank

Guess the biopellets are slowly kicking in here now. My skimmer beast is getting thicker foam now. Really curious how the biopellets will do, but I guess it will at least need 2 weeks before I will be able to notice any significant changes.

Funny to watch today. One of my Emerald crabs had eggs and was releasing them today. Was climbing up on the highest spot on the liferock and then with a pumping movement of the abdomen releasing the larvae. Not a change any of them will survive though. Most got 'mistaken' for yummy live food and the rest will prolly be filtered out.
have no idea about the developing cycle of those crabs as in how their larvae develop, like what cycle they go through, where they would hide, what they feed on, but I would guess with some effort and research one could breed those then.

No, sorry Terry. I noticed it too late. Would have loved to have taken pictures. I just noticed it by accident how the fish were hunting something and going all berserk. Then I noticed about 1mm in size little creatures and when I looked up I saw one of my Emerald crabs releasing the larvaes. 2 - 3 more pumps and it was done doing so.

They can be hard to catch. I've seen my shrimp release larvae one night but the lights were off and I never did try to get pictures.

So, I saw one of my Emerald crabs releasing larvae the other day. Interesting to watch for sure. So, Thursday I was clumsy scrapping off some coraline algae and I didn't see one of my Emerald crabs and Booom, hit it. Dang! Poor thing got crushed by me and eaten by hermit, fish and snails in a few minutes.
So, I went to get a replacement and I got a real meany since HE (deffo a male) was biting the poor LFS guy fingers. Obviously I wanted that one ;-)
Guess you guys know how to check gender on crabs, right?
Anyhows, put the bugger in and next day my girl sitting in front of the tank tells me, that the new one is sitting on another Emerald crab. I say, nawwww, it's a rock. Nope! Another crab it's sitting on! Lemme see, woman!
I was watching live crab porn! They were humping eachother! And here I was trying to have a catholic Pope approved tank! But guess da dude wasn't such a great one, female turned over and started munching algae, made a pretty unimpressed impression. Sounds familiar?

I wouldn't stand for any of that nonsense in my tank. I run a clean and orderly tank :)

Just found another female Emerald crab with eggs here! What a brothel I have here as a tank!
Anyways, the biopellets seem to slowly kick in. No3 was about 15-20 last Friday, now it is down to 2. Looks good I guess.

Ok, it's a crappy video flick, but I wanted to show you that even such a big skimmer as mine is does work properly even on a small tank like the 130D. Guess, some of you thought it is totally oversized and I had my doubts, too. But after several weeks watching this monster skimming I seriously do believe you actually can't oversize a skimmer. Well, to a certain extend, of course. Be reasonable like me LOL

So, I always had 2-3 minor spots where hair algae was quite happily growing, not a major thing though. Since I am using the Deltec FR 509 I noticed the hair algae dying slowly. I was using SeaGel in the inMedia rack, but since I am using it in one of the Deltecs it seems to be way more effective. I have one Tunze post-filter filled with Purigen on the return outlet where it gets pretty nicely swirled around.
Having the inMedia rack surely helps using filter medias as Carbon, Purigen and such, but I think not in the best effective way at all. When I replaced my filter system with the sump, skimmer and so on, I opened one bag of Purigen from the media rack. Only the outer surface of the Purigen changed color, inside, pure white, after about 2 months! Very ineffective way to use such medias then IMHO. Besides, the classical way of filtration should always be mechanical filtration, skimmer, biological/chemical filtration, back to tank.
Another thing I noticed while switching from those Wonderbags to the Tunze post-filter, first the Tunze post-filters are easier to clean and don't clogged that fast. Second, abit more fine debris gets through to the skimmer and this seems to help to create a more thicker foam. Sure, the Wonderbags will do their job, but I think you need a complete set for 7 days if you have to change them almost daily and having a reserve you can throw into the washing machine. Another thing I am not to keen about even if you just wash them without detergent. Imagine how much chemical stuff is still stuck in your washer!
