It reduces the minimum focus distance. The 500D (for lenses 70mm and longer) reduces the minimum to .5 meters with the lens focused to infinity, how much closer it can get from there depends on the lens's close-focusing ability.
With the 500D and my 28-135IS I can get more magnification than with my 100 macro alone.
