Jake I love the idea of a tank at a public place but it's a LOT responsibility to get such a system set up and maintained. Public tanks open up a whole new can of worms like: Feeding, cleaning, ambient light (algae issues). Just be sure to understand the task at hand before committing yourself to such a project.

ATO is a must
ATS - may or may not be a good idea unless you're more familiar with tank husbandry and why/how they work
Calc Reactor - Probably not needed for an anemone/clown tank.

Most of all... Keep it simple!!!

If you want self-sustaining you are going to need a controller like the Reef Keeper Light or the Neptune Apex. They ar like ULTRA AIO. Light Timer - ATO - Monitor Temp, PH, ORP, ect - heater control-and so much more.

If you want to be SUPER self-sustaining you might want to invest in an Automatic Water Change System, but this costs a lot unless you DIY, I wouldn't advise it, just stick to normal WC's.

Some LFS offer maintenance services that you could take advantage of.

Good Luck!

It's at my dads deal ship I was also wondering what type of aquarium. Shape. Gallon. Every aspect must be designed from scratch. I can do anything I want to it because the new office is a ware house so very easy to tap drains and such. I will be posting pics of the space later on. I think I wanna go with 125 or a 220. I will be the one doing the maintenance and the purchases. It's mostly my tank just at the shop hahaha.

you could SO do a 200+ Hex on that budget. especially with less of a footprint, you will save on lighting vs a long tank.
Definately invest in monitoring equipment if you wont be visiting it constantly.

We had a 500g Hex FOWLR in one lobby at work. Right in the middle of the floor, was cool to be able to see all sides!
Every customer I've worked with over the years remembers that tank (RIP).

No one forgets that landmark, it is embedded in memory, and that sells.

Just dont forget, many eyes are on your handiwork. You are an ambassador for our community.

220 deep dimension is a possibility. Not too long n lots of viewing area from 3 sides since it'll have lots of viewers.

Here is the thing, reef systems are going to be complex and expensive and require a lot of work no matter what you do. In addition they require the reef keeper to be very knowlegable. In my opinion this makes them unsuitable for a place like a car dealerships. You need a system that looks great, is easy to maintain, is comparativly low cost, and can be run by anyone.

I think you'd be far better off setting up a conventional FW tank that is fairly large, and keep good size fish in it. That is, fish you can see from across the room. For the aquascape I'd use course aquarium gravel, the epoxy resin "driftwood", and plastic plants. If your into decorations, you could use the large ones for something like an underwater city. This way it's real easy to set up and maintain. The livestock can eat flakes or pellets, and if they get a disease, treat in the main tank. There is no expensive equipment required. You will not need a controller, or calcium reactor, or ATO, or sump. You will not need high end lighting or RO/DI water. A simple filter system will work just fine. Simple water changes and filter cleaning is all you will need to do for years.

Also, keep in mind that most people not involved in the aquarium hobby have no idea what they are looking at. To many, you will have a great looking tank simply because of it's size.

When deciding size and scale, remember one thing:
"Im you build it, they will come..."
:D

...."Fish" Happens!....

If we do decide to do this build I will be maintaining it.... I am there 3 out of 4 days a week for at least 20 min

If you do decide to go this route you can integrate a lot of the monitoring and such to a GHL ProfiiLux controller. You could have a lot of fun with that (lightning, AWC, ATO, and we're working on a THUNDER module to go with the lightning).

In regards to tank size... I love the 120g and 240g size... both of those tanks are well proportioned and very eye pleasing. Be sure to plan it to where kids can SEE into it but there is nothing they can bother/adjust (locking doors on the cabinet). Also you may want to keep in mind who is cleaning the area close to the tank and what they are cleaning with. When I set up my work tank I had to make sure the weekend cleaning crew knows that my door has to be closed before they start stripping/cleaning the commercial floor we have. The dust from their work covers everything and would play havoc on a tank.
