In a FishOnly setup, the primary need for Water change is to reduce toxins /waste.
I would let a weekly nitrate test tell you when and how much to change. FO tank can go up to 40ppm nitrate without much issue, but if you want to get corals at some point, it's best to get used to keeping it under 10ppm ideally.
You have to test to get to know your system, and when you figure out a routine, it's smooth sailing.
