I have seen the question a few times and since I found this forum right as I was thinking about getting started it really made me want to track my progress as well as the costs of getting started. You hear it is "a lot" but until you actually break it down, it is really A LOT! That is not to say it isn't worth it, I dont even have water in my system yet and I really excited and think it is cool to see where the last 3 or so months have lead me.
I have started to outline my build log in the following thread:
http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/reef-chronicles/16423-90-gallon-starphire-start-up.html
for those that want to follow my progress and learning.
While I have a degree in Marine Biology I can basically say I had ZERO experience before looking into this and getting started.
Anyways, lets get to the bottom line and put some numbers down.
Note - these prices are in CAD!
90 Gallon Starphire (48"x18"24") with corner overflow - $750
(custom dimensions would have added about $200 so
I went with the traditional measurements
Custom Metal stand with light stand - $425
I will be covering this and adding the price as soon
as I get to it
50 gallon Acrylic sump/refugium (USED) - $350
New this would have been about $500
60 GPD Spectapure RO/DI unit with auto shut-off(USED) - $210
Wavy-Sea - $320
Gen-X GX-6000 sumbmersible pump - $160
For use with Wavy Sea
Euro-Reef RS100 Protein Skimmer - $350
Aqua-Medic Aquaspacelight 2x250 MH, 2X24x PC (USED) - $800
ELOS Test Kits - $75
Should have been about $250 but online supplier sent ELOS rather than
Salifert kits...thank you!
Sybon Salinity Refractometer - $80
Reef Crystals Salt Mix - $90
80lbs Caribsea Special Grade Reef Sand - $100
Running Total - $3710
Some item and tasks that are still outstanding Include:
Pluming set up
Finish the stand
Misc Maintenance and Monitoring equipment
Live Rock
Live Stock
More to come as soon as I have some more room on my maxed out credit card!
Cheers,
Jayme
