Algae Question

My tank is about 6-7 months old and I have green algae growing all over the glass on the back of the tank. It's not growing on any live rock just on the glass. I am wondering if there is any real harm in letting it grow. It grows so much that chunks of it come off sometimes and float around in the tank, I take it out and I figure it's really no big deal. I have a yellow tang about 4 inches long and he picks at it some times but really doesn't keep it under control. I figure it helps my water quality by sucking up some of the nutrients in the water. Any advice?

If you don't get a lot of feedback in Meet & Greet - might post here

1st thing comes to my mind is to ask if you are using ro/di water? Has to be growing from an excess of nutrients and or silicates - thats the place to start looking. I would look at running fresh carbon with gfo & some purigen too.

You can whip it... if you can post a pic, I am sure some member can id it, that will be key too, if it's green hair algae, it's a lot easier to whip, some other algaes are more challenging.

Good luck !
