Thanks for stopping by Heinz and Lynn!
B9 do you mean the LNHF?
He is doing great in QT for over 5 weeks now.
Every morning and evening when he sees me in the room he gets in position to be fed.
This monday will be the 6 week mark and he will get to graduate to the DT.

I get home late tonight because I had an eye doc appointmnt.
Zo has our dinner ready and I went to feed the fish first.
First the DT. Then the QT.
Strange Durante II is no coming to chomp down the mysis.
Where is he?
I dont see him in the tank.
Maybe he is hiding
Then I look on the floor.
There he is almost under the adjoining bookshelf to the right of the tank
stiff and dried up. It happened many hours ago.

How the @*#! did he jump out.
I have an eggcrate covering plus the hood over the tank
There is a small area in the rear left side where the hang on filter is at. but that is the furthest away from where is body was at. He could have flopped on the hard wood floor for a while.
Or he jumped though the egg crate and through the feeding door to the hood that I leave open to help with gas exchange. His corpse would just fit though the eggcrate. I tested.

At least one of the 3 cats did not eat him then I would still be wondering what happened.

I cannot begin to explain how angry this has made me.
Im not even sad yet. Just mad.

Thanks Blake, Mark & B9.
Jeremy that bird net top of yours looks great and I see that you doubled it up.
I have heard of fish jmping through that too.

it looks like it was the same size as the eggcrate which obviously would have accomplished nothing, so not its around 1/2 to 1/4 the size of eggcrate, which made much more sense to me...haha. And the eggcrate i bought for the tank was around 12 bucks, and this entire setup was about double that, but it works better, looks much nice, and has smaller holes yet lets more light in, its definitely the way to go!

Your mesh frame certainly looks so much better than eggcrate.
Was the cord part of the bird netting or part of the frame kit?

Thanks Scott.
Its just makes me so mad. That LNHF was just d days from going into the DT.

I have never quiet had this reaction to a loss of a fish.
I have been sad and depressed but not angry like this time.

I appreciate that Lynn.
I had never seen him get skittish and try to jump.

Well I really want a Long Nose Hawk Fish!
So I think I am gonna try again.
Third times a charm eh?
On Saturday I stopped at one of my LFS that I have not been to in several months.
They had one but the fish was on the bottom on the tank in the lower left back corner facing the back of the tank. That didnt seem so good. So I look through the other fish and the corals and go check on the LNHF again.
He is in the same spot and then I noticed the top half of his tail fin was missing.
I left him at the store.
Then I go check on the LFS that is just 2 blocks from me. This is the place that just opened last spring and I had bout the first midas and LNHF from last summer. Both of those fish died in my QT. I decided then not to buy from him again until his system was older. No LNHF there though. so I came home fishless.

I ran some errands today which included Home depot and my fav LFS.
At home depot I bought bird netting and other materials needed to make a framed netted cover for the DT.
My LFS had a LNHF! yea! just a little guy - probably an inch and a half long.
So while the fish was acclimating I made a tight egg crate covering. It just fits and in goes all the way to the hang-on overflow. Then I took some bird netting and wrapped it around the egg crate three times and attached it with zip ties. So There is three layers of netting, egg crate, and then 3 more layers of netting. Since this is a QT lighting is not important.
Aint nobody jumping out of this QT!

Pic 1 - just the eggcrate
pic2 - with 6 layers of bird netting
Pic 3 - Here is Durante III or D3. He is eating already.
