28g JBJ LED Nano Cube or is it really?

Let me know your thoughts on this one.

I purchased a 28g JBJ nano, and filled it up the other day using 1 gallon water containers. Started out with 30 of them and had 7 left when the tank was completely filled and the power heads on.

Doing the math, this tank is only 23 gallons and not the advertised 28. What gives?

It's common to have some "deviation" from the factory volume and what we actually run the tank at. Did you add rock or sand? Also many companies are in the "rounding" game.... if it's 27.000001 gallons that means 28 and some may round a tad bit more than that.

Also it's possible the factory filled the tank to it's MAX capacity to get the 27.00001 gallons where in reality no one would ever run their tank like that... They probably used the outside dimensions to calculate water volume which would not work in the real world.

The tank was empty, no sand no rock. Not sure of their rounding because no matter how you look at it, 23 is closer to 20 or if they round up, 25 but no way are we fitting 28g in this tank.

Assuming the sump area in the rear was filled (they do count that as part of the volume) there IS a JBJ 24 gallon LED tank as well. Easiest way to check which one you have is by measuring the outside dimensions. The 28g is 18"x22"x22" and the 24g measures 18"x19.6"x19.6"

Here's another possibility. Are you sure your 1 gallon water containers really had exactly 1 gallon in them? Maybe they were 1.2 gallons. Then 23 of them would give you 28g.

Ok, when I get home i'll check the size. Good point on the 1 gallon containers. I did buy the water so maybe the over filled the containers. That never really crossed my mind since they are selling the water why would the give you more??

I'll let ya all know.

So I received my tank from Gina's Aquarium Supply. It was not a fun ordering experience. They sent me the wrong stand. But they did correct that by sending the correct one out.

Now for the bad news:

The JBJ 28G nano cube is advertised as being 18X22X22, but the tanks they ship are only 18X18X22 my measurements were taken for the outside lip of the tanks frame so the actual size is just shy of my measurements.

Using the calculations 18X22X22 = 8712 and 8712/231 = 37.7 US Gallons But figure in the round front of the cube and soon that comes down to 18X22X20 = 7920 and 7920/231= 34.3

The back filter area should be 4X18X22 = 1584 and 1584/231 = 6.5

34.3 gallons - 6.5 gallons = 27.8 and we always round up so that gives us a 28G Cube right?

But mine is 18X18X22 so lets run those numbers

18X18X22 = 7128 and 7128/321 = 30.9
But figure in the round front of the cube and soon that comes down to 18X18X20 = 6480 and 6480/231= 28.05
The back filter area should be 4X18X18 = 1296 and 1296/231 = 5.6

28.05 - 5.6 = 22.45

So here is the thing I took 23 US gallons and filled the cube up and there was no space left in the filter or the tank its self. So whats going on?

I'd go back to the seller. Not sure how they measure with the rounded front but it sounds like they sent you the wrong tank to go with the wrong stand. There's gotta be some truth in advertising and they surely can't justify rounding up on a scale like that.

Gina's Aquarium Supply is washing their hands. They don't want to deal with it.
Called JBJ and the agreed that something was wrong, but did not know what to do about it.
