Lemonpeel the truth is you and your husbandry are whats going to make your tank the best it can be. The fact that your here asking questions puts you heads above the rest. How many times have you read "Well the LFS told me to do this" They might be right in what they tell you but its only one persons idea of what is right. The example I just gave about Pauls and Glenns tanks shows that. I know it sux that there is no clear way to do it right. If there was I bet there would not be a quarter of the people in this hobby.
Back to the start of what we were talking about. Lemonpeel what do you plan to keep. I guess I should go back and reread this post but I read so many a day. My employes say to me all the time "Going to watch fish porn again" The point I am trying to make is sand, bare bottom, rock, no rock. All of it can be done. There is no clear cut best way. There is the way it works best for you! Thats the best way. I would think you have read some of the posts where very smart people who use big words go back and forth about DSB- bare bottom and from what I see you tend to think bare bottom is better. "I do to but who am I" if you think its better then go bare bottom. See how it works. Not like you cant add sand later if you really want.
