When I purchased my system used it came with a Whirlpool WHER25 RO system. Does anyone know whether it's a decent unit that I should use? Or should I toss it. I've been getting my water from my LFS so far.

It's probably a good unit... however the cost of the filters is 10 times more in some cases. If you had the "standard" filter canisters the sediment/carbon filters can be purchased for 20-30 bucks total which could equal the cost of one filter. Depending on exact specs... just look up the replacement filters and see if they seem expensive.
You COULD sell it on Craigslist and use that money to put it toward a new RO.
