turf algae

Ok, so I read a recent thread that touts turf algae as the low tech method to completely filter an aquarium, just throw a window screen on a 5 gall bucket, add some high lumen clip ons lights, and let it grow.....

I am having a hard time with this one.

The concept is based on the fact that the algae lives off of the nitrates and phosphates. If they are used by the algae you are intentionally growing they won't be there for nuisance algae.
Personally I don't believe it takes care of all other filtration such as a protein skimmer but it can certainly help remove excess nutrients. I wish I had the room to set one up.

Interesting concept, I am in the process of moving, but then will be setting up my 75g, so I might just go this way, and add a PS.
