Sump Return Question

Just got my new Trigger sump in the other day. I have a 1 1/2" bulkhead in the return area of the sump. I bought a 90 degree elbow to put into this bulkhead to draw from the lowest point in the the sump. The problem is the elbow bottoms out on bottom of sump before it will fit in the bulkhead. I want to cut this elbow down a bit to allow it to fit in bulkhead and leave a gap on bottom of elbow.

My first question is do you think 1/4" would be enough of a gap at bottom of elbow? Do you think reducing the bulkhead to 3/4" externally to fit Ext. pump and leaving sump return intake at 1 1/2" cause any issues? This setup was suggested to me. I just want additional advice on that setup. Lastly what if any screen or filter would you suggest for elbow. I want to keep out snails but allow as many pods as possible that can survive the pump :) into the main tank. Ty for any and all advice.

after trimming it down take the hacksaw and cut several V's into it this will give more draw.
