Stupid question any one here run there sump with nothing in except filter wool in the compartment before the skimmer witch is changed every week with a 10% water change and dosing No-Pox,Someone runs a system like that here and claims zero nitrates and phosphates.
What their describing is a well established reef, high expectations of their system capabilities and Possibly Hype of their Advanced Reef Skills using a standard Berlin Method.
A Berlin Method: Typically use of extra Liverock in Display and Heavy Skimmer Use..
Theoretically if you vacuum well, keep feeding to minimal and have less aquatic life, Yes!
Difference between Floss and Pre-Filter Socks is mainly disposable aspect. One can be reused, whereas other(floss) cost effective to just toss.
Pre-filter doesn't collect more/less bacteria, cost more upfront and clog quickly and losses effectiveness.
When socks back up, the water fills the sock and overflows around that section. Basically eliminating any function of contact time with pre-filter or straining effect of sock use!
The Guy, sounds like he been doing it so long he forgot to tell you the basis of his filtration method. By referring, to the system of filtration he's using might help you understand his reasoning for use.
Typically, he learned correct feeding, corrective and effective water Changes, probably taught how to gravel vacuum better like "Trickle Siphoning"....
Probably over the years he was running his system learned how to adjust his Maintence.
But anyone saying they learned from no help or questions like yours is lying and forget ting the learning curve and adjusting his own reef keeping skills! Yes smaller water changes and better control of nitrates, are long term skills.
He's just lucky, someone didn't let him make as many mistakes. His teacher explained reasoning behind the methods of proper care and preventative Maintence!
Imagine if you do small, more often water changes...The system never gets as many problems, ie nitrates!
