RSM timer lighting system question

So, last night, I decided to shut off my moonlights for a night, as my GSP prefers darkness once in a while and has been closed for 2 days.

My question ..... when I turned them off, and back on (before the timer was to kick in for the day) .. this killed the timer. Why would this happen? All I did was turn off the light switch on the side of the tank for the night, during the time time the lights were already off, then turned it back on before the lights came on for the day ... well the lights never came on for the day as I found out when i got home from work as shutting off the moonlights completely deactivated the timer. .. Is that not what the switch at the top is for??

The light switch for the moonlights is in the compartment with the timer itself. If you turned off the switch in the power center, then you turned off the power to timer, light, and moonlights.
