I have this on my 90 gallon now great skimmer.... Sometimes I think I'm over skimming since this is a softie lps tank but now I am upgrading to a 180 gallon. What is the downfall of using this skimmer for a while.... Is it just changing the cup more??

It's not just changing/cleaning the cup more. It's more about the volume of water and air in the skimmer, and the smaller skimmer's ability to process the total system volume. Like most things it's about turning the entire system through the skimmer. With a small bio load, and good husbandry, you'd be fine for awhile.
