My son and I are interested in adding soft corals looking for suggestions.

Try to stay away from xenia and GSP if possible. They are cool at first, but will quickly take over (especially in a 14g!).

xenia can do horrible in certain tanks and are very easy to frag so i would do those. gsp are harder to frag so i would stay away from those. how old is the tank? pretty much every soft coral will be okay. also ifs it looks soft and is a very bright color it is either nps or dyed. if it is dyed STAY AWAY from that lfs

non-photosynthethic. aka needs no light, gets all food from the water collum. found in caves and what-not in he ocean
