Neogonodactylus wennerae

We (Tracy) intentionally brought home a rock with a mantis in it and after watching him for a few days, we think it is a Neogonodactylus wennerae but not absolutely sure. Anyway, here is a link that we started our research with;

If you want too see a couple of picks of our mantis tank just follow THE 20 link in our signature. So...... why the question? Are you looking for one or do you have one? The one we have is a very outgoing creature and will gently remove food from a tweezer when we feed it. It almost seems as if he watches for us just in case we have food for him. From our reading we understand that these mantis shrimp will stay relatively small, around 3 inches, so a 10 gallon should be sufficient. They like to tunnel, so a deep sand bed with the live rock placed right on the bottom of your aquarium (not the substrate) would create a good place for it.

Bummer on Jake busting his glass! We keep our mantis in a glass tank and hopefully we don’t have any trouble with him breaking the glass. We had read that providing a mantis a deeper sand bed for digging will hopefully keep him from reaching the bottom glass and giving it a whack. We understand from reading that the colour of these guys will reflect the depth that they were caught at and so their colour can change once they are in a tank. Do you have a specific colour in mind?

Green. Also jakes favorite spot was where he dug away all the sand.Also WARNING DO NOT TEASE A PEACOCK MANTIS THROUGHT THE GLASS:doh:

Don’t tease one of these guys either! Someone knocked on our tank and the mantis came out of the rock as if he was going to attack but stopped short of the glass. Teasing any mantis might not be a good idea. Green is the same colour as ours, and if we have it right, they come from shallow water and we’re thinking their colour probably won’t change much.

if you have proof that the mantis actually broke the glass, then you have one of the very, very few actual instances where it has happened in a home aquarium.

can you provide pictures?
