good question, i would have to say no you can not have too much. humm, let me take that back. you need to leave enough room for water to flow through out them.
eventually it becomes a matter of what is aesthetically pleasing.
Artistically speaking, it is better to give the eye a period or rest or pause while looking at a tank scape rather than just looking at a wall of rock from side to side.
I agree with both above post.
You need to be able to provide enough room for good flow through the tank and you probably want to create interest in your rock scaping. Like caves and passages.
Terry, thats what 55 gal tank? do you have a sump,thats a great place for more rock. What everybody already said is true after a while you need expansion room in the display.Steve
