Leather mushroom spawning?

First sorry for the title, its all i can describe it as.
My leather mushroom has developed a hole near the rim which is slowly extending and looks as though it will eventually release a small piece about 1.5" in diameter. Everything looks healthy so i dont think it is diseased.
So my conclusion is that its reproducing/spawning/having a baby or whatever the technical term is lol.
Am i right and if so, how can i catch the bit for a frag or should i snip out the last bit and try for a frag ?

mine "pinches" off little sections, i end up cutting them off to prevent them from getting lost in my tank, i then glue or rubberband them to a frag plug, and i have not had a problem with it
