PEM The jewels could probably be efficient kept in a 30 gallon. And there are some "shell dwellers" from the African Lakes that stay pretty small. Its such a big taxonomic group that there are certainly options. But yes the "typical" cichlids do require a bit more room. I wouldn't do the Midaas again since they are downright mean. I'm someone will chime in with a story or two of ones that got along with everyone, but mine are not nice and need tons of space.

If you like cichlids, but lack the space for them, consider some of the dwarf cichlids. You get the colors of the large ones, without the size of the fish.

Another good thing about them is that they don't dig as much as the large ones, which means you can have a planted tank. This is almost impossible with the large cichlids.
