Hey Andrew, PM lethal (Leigh) he's in Victoria and runs a chiller on his 250. He should be anle to help you with parts in your area. Have fun!

If you are doing an internal pump, it goes in the right side chamber replacing the current RSM pump. Here's the basic plumbing premise:

The chiller manufacturer would specify what flow rate ranges are appropriate for that particular chiller. It's should be specified in the owner's manual. Perhaps your retailer would let you have a peek at it. When looking into buying a chiller, I was surprised at the diversity of recommended flow rates between brands of the same horse power. It may have to do with the volume of the plumbing inside the chiller, but that's just a guess. I would definately adhere to those recomendations as too much flow might not cool the water enough, for example.

Chiller side note: In the off season (for you Northern Hemisphere reefers), be sure not to just "turn your chiller off" for the season, unless you empty the chiller's plumbing. A few weeks ago I realized that my chiller pump's power cord had come loose from the power strip. The chiller was still on and luckily it apparantly has a fail-safe to keep it from freezing as the temp was at 73F (set temp 78F). But when the pump started circulating again, the room was filled with a most horrific sulfer smell (like King Kong had a really bad meal). I was immediately concerned that this sulfer compound(s) may have poisoned the water, as I have heard all those stories about stirring a deep sand bed. So I immediately put in a bag of new carbon, got out my net, and was prepared to put everything in a small QT tank if necessary. Well the fish and corals never even seemed to notice, I opened the windows to clear out the smell, and all turned out well. But be sure to keep your pump running or drain your chiller and lines if you're not using it!! Stagnent water gets very smelly. And now I realize that reefers can blame something other than the dog for any bad smells that happen to waft through a room.

Hey Greg/Melinda:

I have my chiller plumbed just like your drawing. I was wondering if you happen to use an ATO like the Tunze Osm. and if you can install it in that chamber with two pumps in there? An ATO is on my buy list, and know most folks seem to install it in that chamber. But will it fit & operate with 2 pumps in there? It looks a little tight to me.

I didn't see the info in your tank thread (nice tank BTW!) Thanks - Pat

Sorry but I only have one pump in there. Someone else should jump in to help you out. My ATO is in my sump.

I have both a chiller and Tunze ATO, there is no need for 2 pumps in the right hand chamber as the ATO pump is placed in the RO container. I have my water level sensor for the ATO in the right hand chamber with the chiller hoses, it's tight but it all fits in.

so basically they chiller will replace the pump on right hand side, the rsm book shows having 2 in there the stock and the chiller pump so this is not required ?

I dont see the need for two pumps, in fact it is a disadvantage as they are both generating heat and contributing to the problem. Mine is set up the same as the diagram provided by goma, just using one.

Hi, I have two pumps running in my right side chamber. One is the stock pump for the nozzle and the other is a Eheim Marin model whose output is connected to my hailea 1/4 HP chiller through the chiller adapted of my RSM 250. I am not having any heat issues and if it indeed does heat up the chiller takes care of the same. using this configuration saves you the hassle of mods that may be required. Moreover the Eheim pump has adjustable flow which takes care of the specific flow requirement of the chiller that you may install.

I installed a chiller in my 250 a few months ago. I have the JBJ Arctica 1/10 and I use an external Iwaki pump. I left the Red Sea pump in the chamber for flow. In other words, I did not connect it to the pipe that inlets into the display area.

For those running two pumps in the right side chamber, where are you returning the water after the chiller?

Mine just goes to the other chiller accessory nozzle. Then on the other side i just a 5 inch tube that goes straight down to the right chamber.
