The male mandarins have much longer dorsal fins than the females when sexually mature.

I don't understand the question though, if the fish was killed by an aggressive trigger why should it matter what sex the goby is? You can keep a male and female mandarin together or two females. Two males will probably fight unless the tank is large enough but they're all just food as far as the trigger is concerned.

The trigger is moving to another tank. The tank is 100 G so probably too small for two males and a female. I am hoping its a male. In that case it would be safe to buy a female when the trigger is gone.

I'd be careful it stinks to play with the life of your tank inhabitants. It is always sad when when is lost especially due to lack of research
