Some fish can carry the parasite for a long time and only when they're under severe stress will they show the spots when their immune system is compromised for whatever reason. Some fish like Tangs and Butterfly fish tend to show infection almost immediately because of their thin mucus coating this isn't the case with most other fish and this is why I recommend treating prophylacticly.
