how can you tell if GSP are alive

I have several pieces where the mantle is the correct coloration but I have not seen polyps in some time. How can you tell if a piece of GSP or full frag are alive and well without seeing polyps?

Usually GSP is rather tough. If the polyps are not coming out, it's usually not happy. Try moving it to an area with less flow and less light and see what happens. Sometimes very intense light is too much for them. I one had some that would thrive under the center brace of the tank. Outside that area the MH light was too much for them.

Thank you. I can try moving one of them to the other side of the tank. I have hungry little hermit crabs and they sometimes snack on them, so i have them suspended on the filter intake tube. Maybe i can try suction-cupping the the intake tube to the other side for a bit to see if they open and use my backup tube.
They never die!
On that note, does that mean even little pieces/flecks of the mantle too?
