hammer coral growth

hello can any one answer this for me

Does a hammer coral need live rock to grow on or can it just grow in a space from the frag plug on the sand?

Does not need rock. I have mine in the sand bed was 2 heads when I got it Not sure how many heads now ( about 4 mo. )I think 5.
