Grey Sand

Saltwater Sarge

New Member
I noticed something when I was cleaning my tank this morning. I was under the tank looking up and noticed strange coloring.

One particularly large area of the tank has sand thats turned grey, and there are smaller areas doing the same thing

Can anyone tell me why this happened? Or is it just something I'd never noticed before...

That's a hard one to answer without knowing a whole lot more. 1. Your sand will turn all sorts of colors and is nothing to worry about; or 2. Detritus is a gray dust.

Your CUC should include nassarius snails, they eat left over food and detritus and will move the sand around some.

Vacuuming the sand bed when you do weekly water changes really helps. I vacuum the top layer of my sand bed weekly and I'm always amazed at how 'stuff' I see at the bottom of the water change bucket.

Yes, it would be better to remove the detritus from that spot through your weekly water change. Its good that they collected at a spot, making the job easier :)
