DIY 55g sump/refug design help!

Sorry its been so long for an update but my wife has been in the hospital for the last 4 weeks with some pregnancy complications so between that and work its been crazy here!

I'd love to see the complete system, I'm wanting to create a sump just like you described it myself and am curious how you plumbed your skimmer and return. I've actually been looking at the all acrylic prebuilt sumps because I made a sump/refugium/pump and my chaeto doesn't spin like I've read it is supposed too, and I get so much flow through my refugium I don't think it's working correctly - and I want a bigger sump, min is only 30 gallons and I'd like to add some more volume.
