Critical Juncture for Sump Design

I’m in the process of laying out a sump for my 75 gallon tank. I’ve purchased a 30 gallon tank for the sump and have cut acrylic necessary for a Model F Sump.

The question I have concerns the intake compartment and the size of the skimmer. I currently have a Berlin Classic Skimmer with the Red Sea skimmer pump. Together these 2 pieces would eat up about 15-16” of the sump. Would it be best to convert the Classic to a Hang-on, not worry about it chewing up 15”, or replace the skimmer altogether? Is it best to reduce the size of the intake compartment as much as possible to increase refuge size? I’m up for ideas so let me have ‘em.

Thanks

Personally I would suggest a different skimmer, I have wrestled with too many berlins over the years to even suggest going through the trouble. A needlewheel skimmer will fit much better in that size compartment and give you much better results.
Easier than adjusting your compartment sizes or converting to a hangon skimmer and getting mediocre results.
