DANG! Nice setup!

A closed loop is simply that. Water drains out of the tank through a pipe to the intake on a pump. The pump output is connected straight back to the tank in different locations. It very effectively does what a powerhead does when you put it in the tank. It circulates water BUT you don't have a powerhead using up room inside the tank. You don't need to worry about the electric going out because there isn't anywhere for the water to go. It just sits there.

CL's are a great way to go.

oh so that has nothing to do with filtration? i gues thats what the overflow is for huh? cool...so i'm gonna need 2 pumps?

Correct. It takes two pumps.

Also correct, the overflow is what gets the water to your chemical and mechanical filtration.

The bigger, the better. I don't think there is a rule that says:

If you have a 55g tank, you should have a 30g sump/fuge.

It's based more on what you can fit in the stand or wherever.
