Controversial DIY Cal/Mag/iodine mix supplement

I will admit I was tired of constantly running to my lfs for liquids and spending ridiculous amounts of money on seachem and other brands for my calcium, alkalinity, ph etc.

So, I did my research.... 4 months of research.... and I am now making my own liquid supplement.

from Walgreens.

Before you all begin throwing live rocks at me, let me tell you what I have observed in the past 2 months.

My trumpet coral has divided from 3 to 9 heads
hammer coral has divided from 3 to 7 heads
mushrooms are out of control,
Zoa garden is blooming.
Leather Coral has enlarged significantly.
Pagoda cup coral is doing great.

Not to mention my 3 Shrimp are molting great, and everything, from corals to fish, seem to have more vibrant colors.

no measurements are out of the ordinary.

Here is my solution.

in an empty 500ml bottle of seachem calcium: fill up with your tank water, add 3 500mg calcium pills, 1 250mg mag pill, 1 drop of iodine, and half a teaspoon of ph/alk buffer.

I dose a cap full every 3 days in my rsm 250.

Do not attempt this if you have not done your research first. I am not responsible for your actions and your tank.
what works for me may not work for you.

Who else has attempted this or something similar?

Always perform water changes.

I am going to watch this post cause I am all for saving cash, gas, and my corals! And if your DIY also enhances the colorization of tank inhabitants then I am all for it!

Making your own stuff isn't a bad thing and is certainly a cheaper option. I've seen it done with buying baking soda from Costco and the Dow flake and magnesium bulk products from bulk reef supply.

I'm not sure what the cost breaks down into but people who dose vs using a ca rx say it works perfectly.

The only question I have on yours, and I'm no chemist, is how pure are the pills you're using? Any extra stuff in them?

Getting the bulk additives you need from a place like Bulk Reef Supply would be a much better way to go. It's not that expensive that way. Also, by using pills you need to take into account what the filler ingredients are. See BRS bulk additives here (offsite) - http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/bulk-media-additives/calcium-and-alkalinity-additives.html

If you are using dry ingredients and need to measure them you can can a digital scale from Amazon for about $9. See an example here (offsite) - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012LOQUQ/?tag=reefsanc-20

What your doing isn't what I'd call wrong. I just feel you can do it much better at about the same or lower cost.

As a side bar, I use bulk chemicals for fertilizers in my FW planted tank. If any of you keep similar tanks, and want great plant growth, you can get such products here (offsite) - http://www.aquariumfertilizer.com/index.asp
