hi all-
i was talking with someone at the lfs and she said that their is a chemical that i could add to the tank to remove silica so brown algae will not grow in the tank. she is selling it for $11. should i try it or will it cause problems?
thank you-

i never put anything like that in my tank. if it gets rid of the bad the good is sure to go aswell.

If it kills the bad bacteria or algae then it will also kill the good bacteria or algae. I would save my money. You need to find the root of the problem and address that. Otherwise even if the stuff works the algae will come back. If you decide to use it and have a skimmer you will need to turn the skimmer off for a while. Chemicals like that drive skimmers crazy and the cup will fill almost instantly.
