Blue sponges

Ok so i ditched the bio balls/ceramic rings in the back of my tank and replaced them with live rubble. I still have those blue sponges though, is it ok to just get rid of them? Or do they serve some purpose. I know they can build up gunk if they are not cleaned but do i need them to catch the gunk in the first place?
help me out please!

I would take them out over a period of about two weeks, gives the tank time to adjust to the new conditions...

I keep one in the back of my Aquapod to catch debris from the overflow. I clean it very frequently at least twice a week. Mine does get dirty more quickly though since it is in my overfed pony tank.
