Just wondering if I wanted to buy 90lbs or so of live rock if Dr.'s Foster and Smith is still the best buy for this?

That's where our rock came from and it was great! Full of life! Nice pieces also!

What is your opinion on upgrading to the Kaelin rock or some of the others? Is it worth it? My budget would allow my to get the most expensive rock they have, but I don't want to just waste it. Does a tank full of the more expensive rock look that much better? or is the expensive rock better to just kind of highlight with, and use the fiji for the majority. I know that this is more of preference... just tyring to get some infuence from you guys!

I have kaelinni in my tank it is nice stuff. it is alot cooler looking than any fiji I have seen, but I am not really sure what it is. Check my gallery for pics.

Kaelinni if i remember correctly is walt smiths daughters name. It doesn't really denote a place that the rock comes from though I believe it is tonga rock though I have no proof of that what so ever.

I got mine form east coast clams they intermittantly sell rock for very good prices. I haven't seen it advertised recently but maybe you can drop them an email and see if they are still offering it.I know they stopped offering it for a while because the claimed weights were alot more than what the customers were recieving. I never weighed mine but it was big pieces and had really nice shapes. I shipped it air freight and only paid $30 in shipping.

good luck

My whole reef is Kaelinni rock and I love it. Great shapes and completely covered with life and many colors of coralline. I got mine from Dr.Mac but I saved by picking it up. Most of the rock I got was basically very old Elkhorn skeletons encrusted with life. The shape of the Elkhorn helped me greatly to create caves and swim-through holes.

I got my live rock from Aquarium Arts . Was (and still am) very pleased with it. It arrived early in the morning and needed no significant cycling, since there was very little die off. Lots of neat life on the rocks, including an encrusting Porites which is still doing well.

They may not be the cheapest, but I would highly recommend their product.

I am fortunate to have a nice LFS so I can personally pick out the pieces I want as far as size and shape is concerned. I know for many of you this is not an option so I can't really recommend a good on-line store. Looks like others have given you some good places to go and check out. Good luck on your LR hunting!:)

I just bought a 49Lb. box of Fiji rock from marinedepot.com and it's pretty nice stuff... nice 'bubbly' Fiji rock.
Not too bad of a price either (at least in the U.S.) since you can get it shipped to your door for $159.
The local LFS wants $11.95/lb. for Fiji rock, and it looks terrible compared to this stuff.
Just wanted to add my vote. :)

Gaubow - If your up for an hour drive, go to Harbor Aquatics in Valparaiso, IN and hand pick your own fully cured rock for $4.00 a pound. I have been there a couple of times and love the place. Check them out here:

If you go, tell Joy that the CIMA boys said hi!:D

thanks reefer.

I have decided that I am going to drive there. I am not re-setting up the tank for about 6-8 mos, but it seems clear to me that this is my best option. Sounds like it is about an hour and a half, but that is no problem... esp. if I can pick out my own rock, at a great price, and get it home in time to prevent die off, thus no cycle. Do they keep large quantities of live rock on hand? I think that I will need 100 or so.

Oh. yeah. Last time we were there, there was probably somewhere near 1000 pounds ready to go. I think they had about the same in the curing system. You won't have any problems finding exactly what you want!
