I have never had a carpet but I have read that they like to bury their foot in the sandbed. Do you have a sand substrate?

If he's feeding, thats a good sign. It might be looking for a suitable place to attach. What type of carpet is it, and how much flow are running in your tank.
You do know that carpets get very large and a 20 gallon will only be able to house one for a short time right?
