Zoanthids doing something strange

I just recieved a colony of zoanthids about a week ago and they were all fully expanded and doing fine. Now there appears to be a brown cyano-like film on them that has appeared in less than a hour and a half. This started when a Cerith snail crawled within the colony. Then a second one crawled within it and the cyano-like stuff really started covering the colony. I removed the snails and blew it off and found that this stuff was coming from the individual polyps. Was this a defense from the snails disturbing the colony? Or could they be expelling zooxanthellae?

Anyone seen this?

I would do an iodine dip on the colony and check those 'cerith' snails carefully to be sure they aren't a meat eating snail. I have cerith snails but have never seen them on any of my zoa colonies!

How are the zoas doing today?

After I removed the snails and blew off the colony, I haven't had a repeat. They look fine now. Strange....
