Question about Rock and Sand

I have a 20 gallon QT that I am wanting to change over to a clown tank
I have 2 clownfish in the tank my question is. ..
If I add sand and dry rock will it cycle and kill my clownfish?

It could. It will depend upon the rock and sand and what else you are going to do to cycle the tank.

In effect, what your trying to do is take a short cut here. This can't really be recommended. You might get away with this, but it's more likely you'll end up with some sort of problem.

You would be much better off having another tank for your clowns while you cycle the existing tank. The temporary tank need not be as large.

Thats what I thought to may have to just a little 10 gallon to move them to until it cycles
