Sarah, I'm joining the crowd here, Its most likely the arrow crab thats chewing on your dusters. The arrow crabs can be pretty neat, but they do eat dusters in the wild.
Hope this works out for you. I just had a duster shed its top as well. The other one is doing fine....we'll see how things go I guess.

Hi, everyone 2 of the feather dusters are dead, but the other one is growing back lovely.
